On August 25, 2016, marks the 100th birthday of the National Park Service. The NPS starting with Yellowstone in 1872 there are now over 400 units in the National Park Service today. In celebration of the upcoming centennial, the National Park Foundation and the National Park Service kicked off the Find Your Park movement. This movement was developed to inspire all people to connect with, enjoy, as well as support America's national parks. We here at the Inn at Herr Ridge are excited to be part of the celebration here in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. We extend a warm welcome to all to come and stay with us and help us celebrate the centennial as well as the support for the movement. You can log onto FindYourPark.com or by using #FindYourPark on social media. We invite you to come celebrate, discover and make new connections with the national parks, and its programs that are in you own backyard and celebrate our second century of stewardship!
Stewardship goals in parks often require funding or elbow grease to address long-term preservation needs, for example Gettysburg needs planning for better trails in the parks, as well as projects that address over-use at Little Round Top. These are two of the legacy projects that need working on as do several others:
- Enhancing volunteerism at Gettysburg and Eisenhower by creating catalog or guide to volunteer opportunities at the parks to better match skills and abilities of volunteers with service learning projects in the parks.
- Using argo-tourism and the local foods movement to make connections with new audiences
- Creating deeper connections with millennials through the Friends of Gettysburg " Recruit" program, social media projects and other efforts.
